(erielack) More on the ELHS Annual Meeting...

Friday night's events:

Basically it was a night for model presentations and slides.

First up was Jay Held with two projects: Modeling the Erie/EL 1100-series coaches using the Athearn heavyweight coach as a starting point. The models come out looking good, although Jay acknowledges that the Athearn intra-window spacing is a little wide. Then Jay showed how to add "support railings" to Proto 2000 gondolas for handling crates (as the Erie did for its Ford and Chevrolet traffic to Weehawken)

Next up was Joe Lofland and his wife Janet. Joe started off with a slide show of the scenery on his layout (Scranton-area), and then went into a live demo on scenery using foam-core as the foundation. Jim Dalberg was the lucky (ha!) volunteer who showed how easy it was to use a hot wire to cut foam. Joe then started adding grass, while his wife started planting trees. Within a space of about 10 minutes, they had a beautifully-landscaped scene with realistic looking trees on a lightweight base. Nice!

Lastly (but not least-ly ;), Matt Klemchalk first presented an overview of all the options available for modeling Stillwell coaches/combines in HO scale - from early brass to the latest Funaro & Camerlengo kits, along with his insightful comments on construction. Matt had several examples on display. Then Matt showed how he made his cast-resin kit of an Erie Magor-built wood caboose (looking very nice, please pester Matt if you'd like to see him mass-produce this as a kit!)

Afterwards, several people presented slides, but it escapes me who most were. The night was closed with an excellent presentation by Doug Barberio on the NYS&W, from east to west, 300+ images in all. The night wrapped up around 11:30 PM.

Saturday morning's events:

Bill Doyle started off the morning with his scholarly study of Port Jervis as a railroad town. Very intriguing the theories he presented as to why this location was chosen as a major division point on the Erie! Many classic old (1800's old!) photos rounded out this presentation.

Yours truly did a presentation on the Boonton Line, including a short epilogue on the dramatic changes that have occurred over the past month. I have been asked to do this presentation at the next Tri-State RHS meeting in Morristown as well, I need to confirm the date (Mike D., can you post this?)

Jay Held did an overview of the Erie Wyoming Division and Scranton-area lines, primarily through a series of aerial views. Very neat! Many of the photos showDoug Barberio did a presentation on... I don't know, I'm afraid! I was pulled out of the presentation to talk with some folks, so I missed it (ACK!) Can anyone fill in the details?

Unfortunately, my wife and I had to leave after lunch, so someone else will have to fill in the rest of the presentations here....

Jim Harr did a great job setting up and running the model contest as well. (Thanks, Jim!) There were excellent models all-around. The ones I remember:

* Ben Bartlett showed his scratchbuilt EL transfer caboose (BEAUTIFUL! With interior and all!) and scratchbuilt DL&W milk car (the underframe detail was amazing on this one!)
* Vince Lee had a beautiful Erie Berk (I believe it was a Berk - or was it a 2-10-2?)
* Jim Dalberg had a DL&W RS3, EL RS3, and three DL&W cabooses

What's neat is, all the models were of superb quality. This is pretty impressive, it was all "master" quality stuff. Most model contests I go to have stuff that ranges from "super" to "so-so" quality, but all the models here were of "super" quality.

Speaking of models, Joe Lofland had on display pre-production samples of his HO scale Dunmore caboose kits. (Photos to follow tonight, as well as an order form) They are BEAUTIFUL! It's a resin kit, but the kit is so clean, there's almost no flash to speak of. He has them in riveted and welded variations. He didn't have the etched end walkway railings yet, but the rest of the kit is pretty much there. It's a simple craftsman kit, too - assembly should go together VERY quickly by the design of it. The only thing it's missing are trucks, couplers and decals. The Convention "pre-production" price was $37.50 each (only at the Convention) - Joe will post up the production prices here soon.

Photos coming tonight, I think... ;)
