FUNDRAISING DRIVE UNDERWAY TO PAY FOR REPAIRS TO THE 1923 PULLMAN CAR
DOVER HARBOR

Washington, DC - The Washington, DC, Chapter of the National Railway
Historical Society has started a fundraising drive to pay for repairs to
its 1923 heavyweight Pullman car, DOVER HARBOR. Through thousands of
hours of volunteer effort by Chapter members and donations from the
public, the parlor-buffet-sleeping car has been carefully restored to its
appearance and configuration as rebuilt in 1934 by the Pullman Company of
Chicago. The repairs were necessary to retain AMTRAK certification and
keep the DOVER HARBOR from becoming a static museum display.

The DOVER HARBOR has returned to operation after 8 months to repair wear
and tear and damage found during the ten-year (PC-2A) wheel truck
inspection required for all private cars that operate on AMTRAK trains.
DOVER HARBOR successfully completed trips to Savannah, Georgia; Newport
News, Virginia; New York City and Boston since returning to service.

DOVER HARBOR is used by the Chapter to further the National Railway
Historical Society’s goals of historic preservation and public education
about the history of railroads. Rather than keep it as a stationary
museum piece, the Chapter charters the car and operates excursions so the
public may experience the elegance and comfort of traditional Pullman rail
travel. DOVER HARBOR originally operated on the Pennsylvania Railroad and
the New York Central Railroad; its last assignment before being retired in
1966 was between Montreal and Washington on the MONTREALER. For more
