(erielack) More classic Great Notch photos

Also provided by (and taken by) list member Ed Montgomery in 1968, here are some more classic views of Great Notch, NJ. Compare these with some of Todd Hollritt's recent images of the electrification taking place here today!

GREAT NOTCH.jpg shows the classic station, complete with ERIE bench out front. Notice how narrow the building is, and how it was shoehorned in between the tracks and the road at the right!

GN Approach.jpg shows an eastbound train coming off the single-track Boonton Line and entering the double-track section. The track at the left is the Caldwell Branch, swinging off to the left. The three-high searchlights in the distance are the home signal for the interlocking here. The classic Erie two-mast signal tower at the left was moved shortly after this photo was taken to replace a similar structure that was destroyed at Otisville, NY in a wreck. The switch the Geep is about to hit is where today's stub track out of the new Great Notch yard terminates.

Great Notch WB.jpg is a view from in front of the station looking west, rich with detail. The road bridge today is a concrete one. That shack at the left is *still there!* (at least last time I looked). The searchlight is gone, replaced by an NJT tri-color signal, and today is removed (it's not necessary anymore as there is no longer a switch in the distance for eastbounds) Beyond the station is a former Lehigh Valley boxcar, used as a MOW toolshed. Barely visible above that is the "Esso" gas station sign - the station is on a hill behind the station. The reason why this place was a such a popular railfan hangout can be seen here - this is almost the top of the hill climbing out of Wayne/Mountain View. Though it looks level, the main is still climbing towards the east. The summit is reached about a mile east of here. You can see the sharp drop-off beyond the road bridge here, and eastbounds put on quite a show at this location!
