RE: (erielack) New Book Cover NYSW in Color

I won't drone on about the book much more on this list - I got my "cheap
thrills" already (hey, it's my first book, so I indulge a little here... ;)

But I will address the question below... ;)

The bottom photo is a simple NYS&W stack train arriving at Little Ferry with
five SD45s - 'nuff said!

The center photo is NYS&W #234 (VERY fresh paint, the lettering isn't even
complete on it!) leading a string of Budd-built passenger coaches into the
Erie's Bergen Archways (I believe the year on the photo is 1951). A
beautiful shot, IMHO. The Archways always struck me as "majestic," something
that truly was classy. This Susquehanna commuter run sure beat the pants off
the Erie's staid black, yellow and dark green-painted commuter runs, in the
"flashy" department (again, IMHO). Note the dropstep on the short-hood end -
the #234 was the ONLY NYS&W RS1 to have this, and only on the short hood
end. The small light above the headlight is a dropstep illumination light
(to light it up at night). S2 #202 was the companion unit with a dropstep on
its long hood end. I haven't found a reason why these two units were picked
(even more oddly, why a switcher and a roadswitcher?!?). Both units
eventually lost the dropstep - the #234 lost it in the late 1950s, but the
#202 carried it well into the 1960s.

The top photo is NYS&W doodlebug #3002, streamlined. Conveniently, Morning
Sun has put this photo on their website, along with my accompanying text...
It's at:

It's amazing what some sheet metal and a nice paintjob can do to a
cantankerous old Brill gas-electric! The silver stripes and edging is a
beautiful touch, and gives this car a sense of "class." By the way, this
photo (and the other streamliner shots in the book) show that these cars
weren't maroon and gray as the diesels were, but rather a wine-and-cream
color (looked much more elegant). My other observation: Susquehanna Transfer
sure seemed like a junky kinda place, didn't it?

If you like the top two photos, you will really like this book. The book is
pretty much all pre-1980 for the first 75% (many are pre-1960, and there are
even quite a few 1940's era images). Trust me on this - some of the images
will knock your socks off. My thanks to the ~20 photographers who were
fortunate enough to capture these priceless images!

I look forward to your feedback, whoever decides to get the book (by the
way, no need to buy them to "support me", as I don't receive royalties on it
anyway)... Your comments can be sent directly, to keep the list from being
flooded... Thanks!
