Agreed, that the latter is relevant to EL, and I won't disagree with you
there. And the M&E, in many contexts, is relevant on this list. But
discussions of cab signals and units' histories really aren't relevant to
the EL. Operations over the M&E, sure. News that the M&E got motive power to
run over those lines, fine. But getting into esoterica about modern
locomotives is really skimming the border of what's really allowed here.
There is also a sense of regionality here, as well - Dave, you live here in
NJ and know the M&E well, so you'll tend to support M&E discussions. The
several folks who have E-mailed me directly regarding whether this is valid
list content are not, and don't find it relevant. My job is to try and
maintain a balance here, and I'm trying my best...

And, by the way, there ARE discussion boards for NJ Railroading elsewhere
where this type of item would be better discussed (and actually, HAS been
discussed there - check out Railroad.net)...

Now, let me go onto something M&E-specific and EL-related... Does anyone
know where the SJ Groves & Sons equipment used to built Route 280 came in to
the M&E? Essex Fells or Morristown interchange? Does anyone have shots of
the SJ Groves equipment while on the EL? (in researching my NYS&W book, I
came across an image of the SJ Groves RS3 at Little Ferry on the Susquehanna
- - apparently, the NYS&W was contracted to "tune-up" the engine after the
construction was completed so it could be re-sold)....
