(erielack) Pronunciation-crazy

A bit more regarding Cohocton & Conhocton (upstate NY). The village is
Cohocton (it is pronounced co-HOCK-ton as several have noted).

As Michael points out, the river that shares the valley with the Erie & DL&W
ROWs is indeed the Conhocton River, not Cohocton. I'm not sure how the
river name is pronounced. Locally, I only ever heard it pronounced the same
as the town (co-HOCK-ton). I don't know whether people were unaware of the
name being different or they were correct and the "N" is simply silent.
Anybody know?

An additional item - the prior name of the railroad that became a major
portion of the Erie Rochester Branch was The Buffalo and Conhocton Valley
Railroad. It ran from Buffalo to Batavia then southeast to Corning (that
line did not go into Rochester).
