OK, I have to concede another point.  The changeover from
three-digit+letter, to four-digit numbers on ERIE cab units apparently was a
merger-related move occurring in the late '50s.

I researched these numbers before, when I painted my ABBA FA1 set, and
apparently I got the change from teeny numbers+letters to large
numbers+letters confused with the all number change.
