I will also add that in talking with this gentleman, he remembers them
experimenting with many horns. He said it was two long ago to give specifics,
but obviously the Lackawanna was looking to give there E8s a better sound,
and they succeeded.
I say the E8 because no other batch of Lackawanna engines had there horns
changed, only the E8s from the single blat horn they were delivered with.
All my Lackawanna E8 photos show all three trumpets on the engineers side
facing forward. Only the Erie Lackawanna merger would bring about pointing
one of the smaller horns backwards.

You have to wonder if a lot of what happened to Lackawanna motive power
after the merger was not spite oriented. I can understand a Railroad not
spending the extra money to have certain options put on a unit, but if they
are already there why would they go to all the trouble to alter them in
regard to the E8 horns. When it came to the Red Bulls eye's, and Visors on F
Units and the Additional Hand Rails on RS3 it came down to complete removal.
