Hi folks,
Does anyone know why the Erie (or VERY early EL) added odd screened
intake louvers on the sides of the noses of most of their FA2 diesels, and
then removed them within a period of about 2-3 years?
Shot's from George's site for evidence, in this case, #7394...
Before (with screening added):

After (removed!): http://gelwood.railfan.net/loco/el7391age.jpg

I've found at least three examples of this. What were the louvers
for? And did they just find them unnecessary?
