(erielack) Lackawanna Steam

I notice that a lot of Lackawanna steam locomotives used single lung (single 
stage) air compressors instead of the cross-compound type. Some of the other 
lines in the eastern US, such as , Reading, CNJ, and NYO&W, did the same 
thing. Was there a reason for this? Thanks.
