(erielack) Edward Jordan Passed Away

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Edward G. Jordan, the first chairman and chief
executive of Conrail, died of esophageal cancer Wednesday. He was 72.
Jordan was known in business circles for his ability to turn around
struggling corporations and organizations. He was best known for reshaping
and modernizing rail systems in the Northeast.
In 1974, Jordan was appointed by President Gerald Ford to head the U.S.
Railway Association. He was chosen in 1975 to take the helm of the
Consolidated Rail Corp., or Conrail, the federally assisted corporation
created to salvage bankrupt and poorly run Northeast rail system.
Jordan resigned the position in 1980 after Conrail's first two consecutive
quarters of profitability. He went on to be dean of the business school at
Cornell University and president of The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pa.,
and served on the boards of several corporations.
