(erielack) Flange Oilers - Low Rail

Way back when slow orders were placed on the former Delaware Division of
the Erie Railroad due to track conditions, Conrail began to experience a
number of derailments caused when wheels of freight cars began to climb the
low rail on curves with high superelevation. The incidents often involved
high cube cars enroute to the Ford Assembly Plant at Mahwah and caused
significant service disruptions.

In order to immediately remedy this problem until the track could be
repaired and
superelevation reduced, existing flange oilers were switched from the high
rail to the low rail. As a result, the number of derailments were greatly
reduced in this territory.
