(erielack) NYTimes: Details of NJT Rate Plan

Details of Rate Plan
December 13, 2001

Here are highlights of New Jersey Transit's proposal to raise
most train and bus fares by about 10 percent on April 1:

¶ Eliminate weekday rail round-trip excursion fares. This
would increase fares 44 percent to 89 percent.

¶ Set a common rail fare - $3.30 one way - between Newark's
two train stations and New York. The current fares are
$2.50 between New York and Newark Pennsylvania Station and
$3 between New York and Broad Street.

¶ Reduce the discount to 50 percent from 55 percent for
people 62 and older.

¶ Raise the surcharge for buying tickets aboard trains to
$5 from $3.

¶ Limit refunds to 10-trip and monthly passes. Currently
the refund policy extends to one-way tickets.

¶ Combine one- and two- zone bus fares into one zone.
