(erielack) Book review... "EMD's SW8"

Just got this one yesterday. It's the latest book from Diesel Era (Withers
Publishing). Of interest is the fact that the Lackawanna/EL had SW8s, so
that's what I'll cover here.

The sections on each railroad are fairly short (DL&W/EL got three pages).
The Lackawanna section was lacking in many details, IMHO, probably because
the author is not innately familiar with the DL&W/EL. There's a good section
of "book knowledge" (short description of DL&W's motive power purchases),
and two paragraphs on EL and CR.

"retired" - not exactly, it was SOLD to a steel mill. (somewhat strange,
isn't that? Why sell one SW8?). Overall, the content is plain "vanilla" and
lacking "meat", IMHO.

Photographic coverage, for such a short article, is very good, and true to
most Withers Publications, photo reproduction is excellent. Photos in the
DL&W/EL section are:

DL&W #510, 6-21-57
DL&W #509, 10-1-60
"DL&W" #363, 6-25-66
EL #362 (B/Y paint), no date
EL #368 (GMY paint), 5-15-77
EL #364 (GMY paint), 9-25-76
"CR" #8693 (EL GMY paint), 4-24-78
"CR" #8696 (EL GMY paint), 5-14-77
CR #8693 (blue), 6-14-87

All the above are B&W.

Elsewhere in the book is a small color photo of EL #363 (GMY paint), 9-72,
and a builder's photo of DL&W #505, 8-51.

If you're a diesel fan, get the book. If you're a completist, get the book.
If you like SW8s, get the book. Otherwise, it's a tough call - a small
amount of EL-related content for the book's price (I paid $18 for mine)....
