Russia received a large number of ALCo RS-1 units as part of the US
Lend-Lease deal created during WWII.  They were still building and
operating steam and these units were some of the first diesels.

The Russians have been good at reverse engineering and did exactly that in
recreating a Russian version of the ALCo units. Note, they did the same
thing with a B-29.

Did you notice the broad gauge?
