Another thought. In the last couple of years before C, I used to see a GP35 working the locals on the NJ&NY (PV). If the EL had acquired the GP38-2s and/or U23Bs, they may have "down graded" the GP35 fleet to branchline service. EL did some somewhat bizarre things. They'd use the GP35s on branches (as noted above) and GP7/9s on road freights. I recall sitting in Ridgewood on Saturday mornings and around 10:00 a westbound would come roaring through, always with 4 GP7/9s in command. Then there was the time we saw an eastbound in the afternoon, SD45-RS3-SD45. My favorite was taking the train home from Hoboken in 1974 and seeing a lashup consisting of a GP35-C42x-U25B working just south of the passenger terminal. How's that for 2500 hp diversity! ------------------------------
