Re: (erielack) Re: B&SW Train Symbols

In my college days, I worked as a switchman in the summers at Port
Jervis (PO) late sixties and early seventies. Until the Poughkeepsie bridge
fire, the NE-74, 98 etc symbol trains operated via Maybrook. The D&H bound
trains via Binghamton were symbol PB. The eastbound counter part of PO-87
was PO-98. Also, when cars built up in Croxton or Hoboken (float yard
operations), they would operate a Croxton or Hoboken ordinary to ferry cars
to PJ for classification for points west in order to relieve the congestion
in those yards. Also, the EL would operate NY division "turn jobs" out of PJ
(crew operated to that point and returned with their train)as needed which
would be named by the turn point. E.g., Maybrook turn, BT turn (Bergen
transfer or interchange with NYSW), Paterson Turn, Suffern Turn etc. The
Erie prior to the merger designated yard jobs that did odds and ends (team
track, scale track. passenger work, etc) as roustabouts. The Erie used both
drills and hauls (predominately drills) to designate local freights - e.g.,
Newburgh haul, Passaic drill, Ford drill, etc.
Prior to the PennCentral and New Haven merger there was a piggyback
train that arrived in PJ from Maybrook unclassified. It was classified at PJ
for destination points to the west. It was referred to by the switchmen and
yardmasters as Maybrook or "MaBo" 99. I don't know what its official EL
timetable name was- most likely NE-99. The eastbound 100s (RI, SFe, CB&Q,
MILW) used to have their New England bound traffic broken out and classified
at PJ. This traffic then was combined into a train bound for Maybrook who
symbol was CB-2 (Chicago-Boston). This traffic was classified into four
blocks for the New Haven - Maybrook, Cedar Hill, Providence and Boston.
