(erielack) NJ Transit adds track

Found this on a newsgroup....

New Jersey Transit is going to add a 1.7-mile track to
its main line between
Paterson and Clifton. The contract is worth $22.5
million to a local
construction company, according to the Bergen Record.

The agency's board last week awarded the contract to
double-track the line.
When the work is finished in mid-2002, it will enable
NJ Transit to run more
trains during rush hours and off-peak hours as well as
add trains for those
traveling in the opposite rush-hour direction.

Train capacity will increase, and NJT expects to gain
the flexibility it
will need to accommodate a surge in riders it expects
to come when the
Secaucus Transfer opens in 2002.
