(erielack) Pocono Train Service

Just got this in:

There was a color advertising insert, "The Pocono Mountains Travel & Home
Guide", in Sunday's NY Daily News, Sept 17, 2000.
Here is the text of an optimistic report on passenger train service.

"POCONO TRAIN UPDATE"

Despite a delay of the final required study, officials say all systems are go
and passenger train service between Scranton and New York City should be up
and running by 2003.

A $760,000 study completed in March needs some fine tuning to meet additional
Federal Transit Administration (FTA) requirements. The FTA also wants
agencies in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to develop a financial agreement
outlining who will provide matching money when federal funds are released.
However, the extra time to complete the study is not expected to set back the
$180 million project.

The proposed plan calls for trains to run to and from Scranton to Hoboken,
N.J., several times a day starting in late 2003, with a ticket cost lower
than current bus fare. Passengers could continue on to New York City by
transferring to another train.

Previous studies have pinpointed train stations along the line at Scranton,
Mt. Pocono, Analomink and East Stroudsburg. The most recent study adds
Delaware Water Gap as a potential station site.
