The trucks currently under Lackawanna 896 are solid bearing versions of the
standard caboose truck sold since the 1960s. The brand name escapes me,
sorry. This truck is not original, installed by Conrail sometime after the
merger. Slides of the 896 in EL stripes show the as-built trucks. The C356
has roller bearing versions of the trucks under the 896.
Interestingly, the very same trucks that were under the as-built Lackawanna
steel hacks are under the Erie 177 at Whippany. I've heard from some
Lackawanna and EL men that the Lackawanna steel cabooses in general were not
smooth riders. I'm sure the steady ride of today's 896 is because of those
new trucks.
The 896 will be at the Festival in Hoboken September 16-17 weekend, and it
will be open for display September 23-24 weekend as part of the Postal
display at Whippany. The interior is completely painted and that completely
new wooden interior look just stunning. As soon as the mohogany floor dries,
we'll install the stove, the interior oil lamp and the outside electric
markers.
Don Oberding and Al Welter are to be commending for their work over and above
the call to keep the interior moving steadily along.
All the best, ....Mike
