The point of taxation is a valid one. New Jersey was the worst in wiping=
out the railroads that ran in the state. If you read Erie or DL&W annual=
reports from the 1950's, you can see heavy taxation on things like Hoboke=
n
Terminal, which hosted unprofitable commuter trains that the State PUC
would not allow them to discontinue. By the 1970's New Jersey did a dece=
nt
job in relieving the EL of the expense of running commuter trains, but by=
then it was too late to sav the operation (and too late to have made the =
EL
attractive as merger/buyout partner).
