They definitely did carry autos, trucks, etc. Both lines, however, did r=
un
several trips during peak hours that were pedestrians only, no vehicles, =
so
that the full capacity of the ship was available for commuters.
At one time, the ferry was the route for what is now hazardous cargo, ove=
rsize
loads (by the definitions of the 1920's) etc, which were not allowed to u=
se
the tunnels before the GW Bridge opened in 1931.
Some early photos show horse-drawn carts waiting for the ferry. Remember=
, the
Hoboken ferry dates back to John Stevens (of Stevens Tech).
