Re: (erielack) Erie Coal

Tom,

According to Bill Sheppard's book: "Tidewater Terminals of the Erie
Lackawanna Railway" there was indeed a coal dock at Weehawken "at the
turn of the century". The 19th of course. It doesn't appear that coal
was handled at the Jersey City North or South yards so Weehawken seems
to be about it. If that dock was in service until the formation of the
EL the book doesn't say.

Keep in mid that the NYS&W had a good sized coal dock up river a couple
of miles and that the Erie used to own the NYS&W.

The O&W dock Schuyler mentioned was located up at the north end of the
New York Central's Weehawken yard putting it about a mile north of the
Erie WEehawken yard.

If you are interested in the waterfront operations of the Erie, DL&W or
EL I strongly recommend picking up a copy of Bill Sheppard's book.

Regards,

Will Shultz
