(erielack) ROW Relics of the Branch & Shortcut

If one is observant, a ride down the NYS Thruway reveals both the grade
remains for the Newburgh shortcut as well as the branch. The grade for the
shortcut can easily be seen running along side the west side of the roadway
just south of the old Starr Expansion. You can see where it actually would
have crossed the Thruway just south of Starr, in the median. It appears a
pipeline runs under it now. The line was removed prior to the Thruway
being built, I believe.
The Newburgh "Branch" ROW runs under the Thruway just North of Vails Gate.
You can make it out quite well now that the trees are bare. It is north of
where the O&W ran under the road. From Rt 32 you can actuall see where the
junction was between the branch and shortcut. The track remains towards
Newburgh.
BTW, Another O&W station remains in Orange County. It is now called
"Rusty Nail" restaurant on Dunning Rd in Middletown.
