Re: (erielack) Eastern Ohio Lowgrade

Rick, you are correct that the Erie planned, quite seriously, a line into
Cleveland (other than the one they had, of course) that as I understand it,
would have left the present main around Meadville, and headed somewhat north
of west to get to Cleveland, along something called the "Pymatuning
Escarpment" (I _think_, we're depending on ten-year-old memories here) and
the Grand Scheme was to have a line out the other side of Cleveland to
?Marion?. It's likely that this would have become the main line, and have
been a low-grade line too. It _certainly_ was surveyed, that much I am sure
of. George Elwood's later post makes that pretty much for sure, but I
believe that they even had cost estimates for the work too.

Your remarks about the line through Kinsman are interesting. It would be
very interesting to know if this was in fact the Erie at work. I never
heard of any actual dirt being made to fly on the project, just ink to flow.

I haven't looked at George's site for the map yet. If someone's found it,
could you post the URL for the map, please? What is the date on the map?
