Of course, there was good and bad to this gauging decision. Good:
The Erie
was the preferred high/wide routing in the East, as nobody could
compete
with their clearances.
This was a side effect of the decision in later years. Back in the
early days, the DL&W was 6' gauge also. They ended in Hampton, NJ at the
CNJ interchange and the CNJ had a 3rd rail from Hampton to E'port so there
were two routes for 6' gauge traffic/high and wides to NY. Of course the
DL&W later took over the M&E and the interchange at Hampton dribbled to
nothing eventually.
