I'm always glad to get a question that makes me go back into my books. 
Unfortunately, my archival research in this area stops just short of the
building of the Newton Depot in 1873, BUT in the book you mention, 
Lackawanna RR in NW NJ, on page 172 is the following sentence:

'Initial plans to trim the building in stone had been dropped, but the
station, now made entirely of brick, was still handsome and commodious,
measuring approximately 22 x 70 and boasting interior plumbing.'

We'll have to take Lowenthal/Greenberg's word on it until I can find the
article.

PS I'll agre the station looks smooth-sided in photos, but it also
doesn't look much like clapboards.
