(erielack) 150th anniversaries

Different sources give slightly different dates (variously Dec. 31, 1849,or
Jan 1 or Jan. 12, 1850), but at about this time 150 years ago the track of
the New York & Erie RR reached Corning. This capped a very busy
construction year. Since reaching Binghamton on Dec. 27, 1848, the Erie had
been extended west to Owego on June 1st; and to Elmira on Oct. 2nd. In
addition, the Chemung RR was opened from Horseheads north to Jefferson
(Watkins Glen) on Dec. 16, 1849. It was operated by the Erie until May
1872. Also the Cayuga & Susquehanna RR was reopened on Dec. 17, 1849,
after being purchased by William Dodge and George Scranton and extensively
rebuilt. The entrance to Ithaca was changed from inclined planes to a
switchback and the line changed to 6 foot gauge to connect with the Erie at
Owego. This was in a sense the start of the DL&W system, since construction
didn't start on the Liggett's Gap RR until spring 1850.
Finally, Newburgh received it's first train via the Erie's branch from
Greycourt on Dec. 15, 1849. Regular service didn't start until Jan. 8, 1850
when a celebration and public feast were held.
