I don't know the reason for the extra sandboxes either but have seen early photos of the units shortly after they went into service and they weren't part of the original configuration. Probably added at Hornell after they found a need for them. Again, if memory serves, it was maybe mid-fifties when they started to appear. It looks like the original doors with the center knobs were all replaced when these extra doors were all installed. The new doors had a kind of hand slot in them. Check later photos of the engines.
