Re: (erielack) Erie Limited

Jack and all,
Beg to differ about the P2K E's. I have 14 of 'em just like the Erieand
none of mine ever came out of the boxes with a Mars light.
Life-Like, at the time of production offered all kinds of options,
depending on the road name a modeler wanted, including various steam
generatorconfigurations on the roof.
As far as I know, the Erie models are PRETTY DANG CLOSE !!
Not positive that the dark green couldn't have ben a touch lighter
though.
I painted and decalled several AHM and Model Power Shells before the
Protos came out, using AccuPaint and their colors seemed to be right on.
But when the Protos came out the detailing was OH SO NICE I wasn't about
to quibble. And all of mine run as good as they look.
Tell you what though ! if anyone needs to move a layout across the
basement just hook up a couple of Con Cor or the old Model Power E
chassis to the layout legs and throttle up ! Man do they pull !
Another twist that I did was to send to Life Like for some freight
pilots.
As an Erie purist, I left two pairs of E's with the, as delivered,
passenger pilots with doors over the couplers and used freight pilots on
the rest, since Erie changed theirs not too long into the engines'
careers.
I also placed the "RADIO EQUIPPED" lightning bolt decals on all but one
pair of the units with freight pilots
The time line, as far as I know, was - first the passenger pilots went.
Then, not too long after the freight pilots were installed, the RADIO
EQUIPPED lettering was applied.
Can't give you firm dates or years when these changes showed up but if
you carefully check photos over the years I believe they will bear this
out.
Don't know when they began removing the skirting around the fuel tanks,
but I would say mid-fifties roughly. And I believe the ex-DL&W E's kept
their skirts around the tanks until the merger or fairly close to that
time.

Just some musings on the E's
