(erielack) Coal Resource

<color><param>0100,0100,0100</param>Guys,

Here is some information on a source of information about coal
mines in both the hard and soft coal industries that would be of a great help
to all of us modeling the movement of coal. This is from the Lehigh Valley
list on www.railroad.net

<paraindent><param>left</param>You may already know this, but here goes anyway. Try and find
copies of the Keystone Coal Manual from the late 40s and 50s.
These are great sources of information for the material you're
looking for as they covered each coal-producing state.
Traditionally, Pa. has been divided into anthracite and
bituminous regions, a division that's followed in materials
produced by the Pa. Dept. of Mines, the US Bureau of Mines,
and in Keystone. You'll find a survey of the anthracite region in
one section of the book, and in the back, a directory of mines
which lists each producing property with a description of
preparation equipment, etc. It also tells which railroad(s) served
which mine. What's even more useful is the advertising in these
books as the ads often have maps showing traffic routes,
customers, etc. Great stuff! </paraindent>

<paraindent><param>left</param>BTW, in the part of the country where I grew up, we rec'd cars
of "Blue Coal," Reading anthracite, and D&H. This was used in
home heating and industry. For cars, I don't have my copy
handy, but there is a color guide to LV/CNJ equipment which
may be able to help you. </paraindent>

<paraindent><param>left</param>Sorry to have rambled so long. </paraindent>

<paraindent><param>left</param>Hope this helps </paraindent>
