Industrial locomotive leasing firm Relco, known for its fleet of Alco high
hood switchers, is beginning to purge the older units. One has been
scrapped, the former Buffalo Creek unit is about to find a home. The
Lackawanna unit, No.409, is currently for sale; it's a running unit on blunt
trucks that have been converted to roller bearings. The following is a note
from John Mech about the status of the Relco fleet.
Meanwhile, the asking price is $45k for the Lackawanna unit, FOB central
Indiana. This is high for a switcher, but it's a rare beast and it's the
only Lackawanna or Erie high hood extant. I'm inquiring as to the condition
of the wheels and other items necessary for movement. Is there any interest
in passing the hat to buy this unit? (off list replies can be confidential)
Finding a home for it is the easiest part of the battle as railroads in New
Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York will happily house and run it. High hoods
are terrific industrial units -- they are light weight and those Blunt
trucks are so flexible they can run on the worst of track.
