Given the way the tracks appear to have been arranged, the purpose
was to get westbound passenger trains to the platform at Denville.
The Boonton line only had one platform there, on the eastbound side.
This track went under the two center tracks  (there were 4 at the 
time, merging to 3 as you went west toward Denville) which were used
for freight, principally coal trains.  An eastbound coal could be 
run without interfering with the westbound passengers...
