Just a little follow up on last week's discussion of tower call letters
(not just towers, but also stations, offices, crossovers, and any
facility needing telegraph identification). As noted, there were
repeated designations along any one railroad; e.g Erie's NJ Newburgh
Jct. on the NY Div. and NJ Niagara Jct. near Buffalo. Then there were
intra-divisional overlaps caused by the EL merger, e.g. UN Port Morris
on the DL side and UN Harriman on the Erie (or NX Newark Tower on the
M&E and NX Draw on the Erie's Newark Branch). But according to my copy
of the 1957 Agreement between the Erie and the Order of RR Telegraphers,
the New York Division had three places designated WR: West Arlington
Tower / Drawbridge on the Greenwood Lake Line; Woodridge Station on the
NJ & NY; and West Cornwall agency on the Newburgh Branch (I believe this
station was on the remnant of the old Newburgh Short-Cut). As if that
wasn't enough, there was WR Tower in Huntington, IN. Then there was RW
station in Sparkill, NY. This all sounds like something from the
X-Files. (Of course, X was the tower at Olean protecting the crossing
with the PRR Buffalo Line; no other X's listed).
