Dear Fred,
In answer to your question, most railroaders (covered by labor agreements at
least) do not pay one cent into the Social Security system. We have two
levels, or "tiers" of deductions take out of our checks, each for a specific
purpose. I have forgotten offhand what the different tiers are for, but I
will look in my files and provide this information if you would like.
The different tiers of deductions are taken out simultaneously, to a certain
point. I believe the tier two is taken out to a point just past $60,000.00
and tier one stops after about $75,000.00. My colleagues and I always enjoy
those last few checks of the year for precisely those reasons!
Hope this helps answer your question!
