I think they added the Erie Around 57 just after they started using
Hoboken
the Ferry terminal at Barclay St read  LACKAWANNA - ERIE for several
years 
then they rearranged it to read ERIE LACKAWANNA so I think it meant
ERIE & LACKAWANNA...
