AL and List, Well put. I agree with you when it comes to an "interesting" modern consist. The cars of today are nothing more that non descript shapes on wheels that do the railroads bidding. It is/was nice to see a train from years gone by with a plethora of house cars painted in that owner's particular shade of "box car red". If you were observant you could tell ownership just by the color of the car; no reporting marks needed. In this day-and-age when I sit at a grade crossing to wait for a passing train, I seldom bother to take a close look at the rolling stock, if at all. Just get off the rails and let me be on my way. I'm afraid that those things that made a railroad what it was are lost forever. The thrill is gone!
