A thanks to Paul T for forwarding me a copy of the photo in question yesterday. I don't have a copy of the calendar. Paul said the photo is in one of the small NY city yards. Anyway, the box in question is a winter time hot water heater that ran off the engines diesel fuel. This hot water was circulated through the engine, thus preventing the engine from freezing up when the engine was shut down. It had an electrical ignition, thus the cord you see hanging. There was a small light ( red ? ) that was on top of the unit right out in front of the cab. When the light was lit everything was working. If the light went out, when the heater was suppose to be in operation something was wrong. There was supposedly at least one additional EMD unit so equipped that was kept out at Newark, on the Newark BR. I would like to say pretty good for a Lackawanna fan, but I must admit, I had to ask.
