    It's not as bad as it seems; Boyd talked to him yesterday afternoon. Read on:

    I just talked to Marc Balkin, who posted bail and is now home. "I don't know
    how I coulda been that stupid," was is primary thought.
    
    He has engaged a very good lawyer and will fight the sex charges, as there is
    a fine line between a "sting" and "entrapment."  The hot pursuit was the
    result of his not being aware that it was police who were approaching -- they
    were plainclothes and unmarked cars.  He basically saw a car trying to cut him
    off and a burly guy pull a gun.  In that neighborhood, I'd probably have run,
    too.  I've driven that van, and the visibility anywhere but directly ahead is
    pretty poor.  Apparently the van started to roll and one of the agents fired a
    shot into the driver's compartment, smashing both side windows and just
    missing Marc -- seeing no cop cars or badges, he just floorboarded it outa
    there.  When he realized it was police and not thugs in pursuit, he
    voluntarily stopped and surrendered without further fuss.
    
    He was treated well in custody and released when his wife posted bail.  At
    this time he faces only state charges, even though the sting was a new FBI
    task force program.  Don't bother trying to e-mail Marc, the FBI confiscated
    all of his computers as evidence.
    
    The brunt of the underage sex charges focus on "intent" of a deed that never
    occurred with a person who does not exist by a solid citizen with no other
    police record.
    
    Marc apologizes to his friends and associates for causing such embarrassment
    and asks for your understanding and support.  He asked me to forward this
    message, as he is presently without a computer.
