The recent commentary on the EL built-but-never-delivered U23Bs has prompted some research on the matter. When looking at the list of U23B production, answers are not obvious, but suggestions abound.... In looking at production around the LV order, you can see that L&N 2800-2824 (25) were following LV 501-512, and SOU 3935-3954 (20) were ahead of them. Although the SOU units had lower serial numbers, they were actually delivered (time-wise) AFTER the LV units. This could either be attributed to reconstruction of EL units to SOU features, or SOU offering to take a production delay to get the USRA units out the door first. The L&N 2800 series has 25 instead of 20 (could have been expanded), pre-maturely start in a new number series, and they have different weights than the rest of the L&N fleet though not the same weight as the LV units. As only NdeM (8), FCP (10), TUGCO (1) and CR (10) purchased the AAR-B truck after 1974, the EL units were obviously re-trucked with Floating Bolster models before delivery. - -- Kevin ------------------------------------------------------------ Visit the erielack photopage at http://el-list.railfan.net ------------------------------
