(erielack) Pacing the CP/DH

I've had a couple of chances recently to pace some CP trains along the
DH between Sanataria Springs and Sidney. What a High!!!

Tuesday night, 9/29, a Nthbd hit Afton at 5PM. I paced him to Bainbridge
at between 45 and 50 mph - he had 6 SD40s and a fairly decent length
train. The 2nd SD40 had the new CP Beaver paint scheme - looked really
sharp. Sorry there were no MLW/alcos but it is so impressive to see them
run like that on that line. There was a photographer at the Bainbridge
RT 7 overpass - didn't know him - maybe he's a recipient of this - if
so, you got a really good shot (the light was excellent) and probably a
thrill when he went by at about 48 mph.

A few weeks ago my son and I paced a train from Binghamton to Sidney -
we were in his truck - it is fitted with a set of train horns (K3L to be
correct - the horn notes do not exactly match CP K3H, but are close). My
son is into horn collecting. We had our video camera also. We asked the
engineer to give us good crossing warnings as he proceeded north because
we were going to be taping - needless to say he complied. He was sitting
at Bevier St for a long time while the train was inspected and
orders/paperwork were delivered via a cab - this was when we had a
chance to talk to him. When he finally got underway - we taped him at
several places, including: Lower Nolan Rd, Upper Nolan Rd, Sanitaria
Springs, Hancock Rd Crossing, Mootwon Rd crossing (Dyes northend),
Tunnel Rd crossing, 1st crossing north of Tunnel, Lovejoy RD crossing
- - pacing along Rt 7 at: Nineveh Jct, Afton Golf Course, Kirby Flats,
Gennison Plant, Rt 7 overpass. We also caught him at the "Back River Rd
underpass", just below Sidney - I don't know how - because we had to
cross the river and get up the "Back River RD" - it was dusk when we got
to Sidney but what a ride!!! Between Afton and Bainbridge he held a
steady 50 mph - on the video you can see the SD40 "porch chains" swaying
back because of the wind - was that ever fun!!!!! Needless to say we we
echoing his crossing blows - and he echoed back a few times - anyone
living up there must have thot there were 3 trains all coming north side
by side! We have more fun with his horns.

At another time and another place Justin had a train stop after they had
spotted his horns. The crew wanted to ask him about his horns. It's very
seldom a train will stop just to talk to a railfan!!

Regards, Dennis and Justin
