from Eastern Rail News: After the report of an Norfolk Southern agreement on Conrail's Olean Secondary, many reports surfaced about through freight traffic. These reports, while seeming reasonable, are confirmed to be false by Norfolk Southern. The reopening of the line to through traffic is reportedly "wishful thinking" on the part officials from Western New York and Pennsylvania. Norfolk Southern would gain nothing by routing trains over the Olean Secondary. It's 70 miles from Hornell to Buffalo, and 98 miles from Buffalo to Erie. The Olean Secondary is 146 miles from Hornell to Corry, and that still leaves about 45 miles to Erie. It is no real shortcut and the only advantage it offers is by-passing some of the Lake-effect snow in the winter.-Bill Stephens Bill's Syracuse rail page http://www.dreamscape.com/pontiac/rail.html ------------------------------------------------------------ Visit the erielack photopage at http://el-list.railfan.net ------------------------------
