Additional reading finds it was also claimed to be more visible, cutting
down on the number of grade-crossing accidents according to railroad
studies.

here's a question - did some G/M/Y units "accidentally" get red nose logo
decals, or did they just look that way in the process of fading from
maroon?  I've noted a couple of pictures where the paint itself looks good,
although not fresh, but the nose logo is more red than maroon.
