Toward the end of a good afternoon of railfanning we swung by Buffalo's SK
Yard at the western end of the ex-Erie Southern Tier line to see if there was
any interesting power around. Turned out there was!
The train was just starting to pull west through FW to CP Draw and the
connection to NS' NKP main to Chicago so there wasn't a lot of time to waste
on the chase. After shooting it from New Babcock St. ajacent to CP's SK Yard
we hightailed it down old Babcock St. to Elk St. and the overpass above the
ex-Buffalo Creek/CR main and NS yard for some overhead shots. As the train
passed under the bridge we noticed a freshly painted EMD 1200 HP switcher and
center cuploa caboose on a siding by Buffalo Color toward CP Draw. After
shooting that we hopped back into the "Railfan Cobra" and made tracks for
CP Draw which was about a mile away by road. At the foot of Smith St. the
pavement goes away and the last several hundred yards is a rutted dirt road.
There wasn't time to tiptoe through to the drawbridges so we bottomed out a
few times during the impromptu off-road gymkhana! As it turned out we had time
to spare so we hid the car out of sight from the main (it was sort of light
tresspassing there) and set up for the shot of the head end passing under the
old DL&W passeneger main bridge and then caught them broadside.
The 90MACs were offline so we didn't get to hear the H engines work at all,
but we think the chase was worth the pics :)
