quake.gif This image of the Los Aneles Northridge earthquake area was aquired by a NASA Ames ER-2 aircraft flying at 65,000 ft. at around noon on January 17,1994. Aerial cameras using natural color film took several photographs, including this one showing the earthquake epicenter at Northridge. In the upper center portion of the frame you can see extensive damage to Bullock's Department Store and the collapsed parking garage at Northridge Fashion Center. The railroad car derailment and damage to a furniture store facade is shown in the lower center.
Three ER-2 aircraft are managed by Ames-Research Centers' High Altitude Mission Branch in the Science and Applications Aircraft Division. They provide readily available sensor platforms to study the Earth, atmosphere and oceans, as well as celestial phenomena. They are also routinely used in instrument development for future satellite payloads. I believe this photo also exists at parc.xerox.com as well as other sites. uploaded by greg@ncel.navy.mil greg@roundhouse.com
